The historic city centre has monuments like :

the octagonal Baptistery built in pink Verona marble sculpted by Benedetto Antelami.

and the romanesque Cathedral, Duomo with the famous cupola with the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
frescoed by Correggio

Behind the apse of the Cathedral there is the church of

San Giovanni Evangelista, built for the Benedectine order, its elaborate white marble Baroque facade contrasts with the Renaissance architecture of the cloisters and convent.



Teatro Regio
The neoclassical facade has a portico with ten Ionic columns, a double row of windows and decorations by Tommaso Bandini on both sides of the tympanum representing the allegories of Fame and the Lyre.

The Palazzo della Pilotta, the famous building wich houses the National Archeological Museum, the Teatro Farnese, the Palatine Gallery and the National Academy of fine arts.

The Chamber of Saint Paul used to be part of the abbess' apartment in the Benedectine Convent of Saint Paul, decorated from 1514 at the order of Abbess Giovanna da Piacenza, whose priorate was characterized by a lively cultural life.
The frescoes painted by Correggio in 1519 can be considered true masterpieces of Italian High Renaissance art.
